A ticking health bomb – the fight between Omega-6 and Omega-3 is vital for your health

Mankind’s evolutionary development has improved our living standards in endless ways. However, in at least one important area, the situation has been dramatically deteriorated. From the Stone Age up to 1950, man consumed a diet that contained equal amounts Omega-6 and Omega-3 – ratio 1:1.

From 1950 onwards, our diet has radically worsened and consequently also our balance between Omega-6 and Omega-3. The problem does not stop there – studies show an extreme imbalance among teenagers and young adults. This negative development continues – today the ratio is 15:1. Tomorrow…

Cells surrounded by cell membranes make up our body. The vital fatty acids Omega-6 and Omega-3 compete for the same spot in the cell membrane and our diet determines who the winner is. This game is absolutely crucial for the body’s ability to repair damages and resist diseases. Omega-6 has credentials such as being inflammatory driven and Omega-3 possesses anti-inflammatory abilities. Scientists believe the quick development of life related diseases after 1950 to be directly related to changes in our diets and physical activities. During this period, the Omega-6/Omega-3 relation has risen from 1:1 to 15:1 in the western world.

Man was created to have an Omega-6/Omega-3 balance of 1:1. Scientists believe that the Omega-6/Omega-3 balance should be 3:1 at maximum in order for an infection to be under control. The Nordic Ministry recommends a ratio of 5:1 at maximum.

We in the western world are far from that proper balance our bodies were made to have in order to gain and maintain a healthy condition. The World Health Organization (WHO) appreciates that 70 % of all sick leaves will be based on problems directly related to diet and lifestyle related problems and refers to the most common diseases – heart- and vascular diseases, muscle and joint problems, milder psychological problems and stress related problems.
